Ice Age 2: The Meltdown Review

Ice Age 2: The Meltdown for the GBA has been released to coincide with the film version, along with other versions for all the major consoles. I’m happy to say that this second Ice Age title offers a better design overall than the first version, which suffered from overly sensitive hazard detection. In fact, this title isn’t really an action game at all; instead, it’s a puzzle game with a few arcade levels thrown in.

The puzzle levels are locational puzzles that require players to figure out which of three characters is required to get through specific areas and open them up for the other characters to access. Manny, Sid and Diego all have different abilities: Manny can push rocks and catapult the others across areas, Sid can skate on frozen water and walk on thin ice, and Diego can claw apart thorny bushes and dash. The idea is to figure out which character to use at certain times and places.

In each world there is also an arcade level that features Sid running through a platform area as fast as possible while collecting acorns, and a boss level, which is another arcade level that involves maneuvering through the water, avoiding hazards and hitting the enemy.

The levels have to be completed and unlocked in order, but if players get stuck toward the end, some pop-up characters show up and ask if players want to skip that level, which will take the players to the next level. Once unlocked, players can replay any level.

The graphics are very nice, with bright, warm colors. The characters are clear and sharp, and look pretty much like their movie counterparts. The backgrounds in the levels are also nicely done.

Ice Age 2, while better than the first version, still doesn’t offer anything much above the ordinary. The puzzle levels are well designed and offer a good challenge to younger players, without being too difficult. However, having three characters to switch through every time they need moving is rather a pain after awhile. The puzzles are thoughtful and involving, but would have been more fun with just two characters to swap around. The arcade levels are average, and aren’t very exciting.  Still, they do offer a little variety to the puzzle levels.

A decent game for young players who enjoy a slower-paced game with puzzles to solve.  Kids who want more action or speed will be bored. Families will need to consider the temperament and tastes of their children, before deciding on whether to get this game or not.

Review Scoring Details for Ice Age 2: The Meltdown

Gameplay: 7.0
Solving the puzzles is fun at first, but having to swap between three players every few seconds gets tiring. Two characters would have been much better. The puzzles are well-designed and thoughtful, though.

Graphics: 8.0
The graphics are boring, too.

Sound: 6.0
The music is very average.

Difficulty: Easy
The game is easy and not frustrating at all for young players.

Concept: 7.0
The puzzle theme is slightly different than most games for younger players, and is a good idea.

Overall: 7.0
Manny, Sid and Diego are fun to play with, but having to keep swapping around endlessly is rather tiring. You wouldn’t think having one more character to swap than usual in these type of games would make that much of a difference, but it does. This is a game best suited for patient children who enjoy games with a leisurely pace.
